CUSL 2009
UPDATED: 5/26/09
CUSL Recreational
CUSL Competitive
CUSL Open
Thursday League
Tuesday/West League
CUSL 2009 registration is closed. Team and schedule information will be provided soon.
See below for information and descriptions of all our divisions. MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS. The registration process is basically the same as last year, but the fields have changed. Just like with Spring League, we cannot use Schiller. We have acquired extra fields to try and minimize our need to use Miller Meadows, but these extra fields have incurred extra costs, which is why CUSL fees have increased slightly.
Also, we are looking for volunteers to be captains in all divisions. For the Rec divisions (CUSL-Rec, West, and Open), we are looking for people that are dedicated to the notion of making ultimate fun and keeping the atmosphere inviting and laid back. Captains should be interested in teaching and fostering a relaxed environment that is welcoming to players of all skill levels, with winning being a secondary concern (it is not like you're playing for money). For the Thursday division, we especially want captains that are enthused about teaching the game to relative newcomers. This is the division we use to try and foster a love of ultimate in people that are being introduced to the game, in some cases for the first time. For the Competitive division we'll take any jerk who thinks they can run a team at that level. :)
CUSL-RECREATIONAL (MONDAY & WEDNESDAY)
This is the largest CUSL division. Playing on Monday and Wednesday nights, teams in CUSL-Rec are set up so that a 4/3 gender ratio can be maintained on the field to make this a truly co-ed division. Open to any player of any skill level, spirit is what is emphasized here. CUSL-Rec is divided into North (see field list below) and South (Washington Park) subdivisions so players get to play as close to home or work as possible.
CUSL-Rec will strictly enforce a 4/3 gender ratio on both the field and in registration. As with last year, the number of men in CUSL-Rec will be capped based upon the number of women that register. Also just like last year, whether a man gets into CUSL-Rec is solely determined by order of registration. Having women in your buddy group does not guarantee entry into CUSL-Rec!! Your registration order is determined by when you have /completed/ the registration process, including submitting your waiver and your payment. Simply filling out the registration form is not sufficient to qualify as registered. Differently from last year, there will be separate caps for the North and South divisions, to prevent a repeat of the imbalanced team size we had last year. As a general rule, teams will have 8-9 women and 11-12 men. Any men who do not get into CUSL-Rec have the option of playing in CUSL-Open instead.
As with previous years, teams will be randomly assigned. However, you can register with up to THREE BUDDIES, based on the following rules:
1. CUSL-Rec buddy groups can have a maximum of FOUR (4) total people that have played ultimate before.
2. CUSL-Rec buddy groups can have a maximum of TWO (2) men, with one exception: If a given buddy group includes three women, then it can include three men. Two of these six players must be rookies (defined below).
3. Beyond the four experienced ultimate players, a buddy group can also include up to TWO (2) ROOKIES. A rookie is defined as someone who has an experience rating of "1", meaning they have never played any form of ultimate before.
4. Any buddy groups that violate the gender rules will be split up by the Commissioners as they see fit.
As with Spring League, CUSL does not have access to Schiller Woods. We have reserved space at Miller Woods (the site of Spring League), but even before all of the problems with those fields this spring we recognized that it was less than ideal for the North divisions of CUSL. We have made significant efforts to line up other fields, with a reasonable degree of success. Our hope is to limit the use of Miller as much as possible, but there will be some games out there out of necessity.
As in past years, we will have three games at Bunker Hill. That is the maximum the Forest Preserve will allow us to have over the summer. We will also be playing games at four other sites:
1. Richard Clark Park: Along Rockwell just south of Addison (immediately West of Lane Tech). We hope to have four fields here, but may have only two or three depending on whether the fields can be made playable by June.
2. Warren Park: 6600 N. Western Ave. We will have one field here on Wednesdays.
3. Lincoln Park @ Montrose: Two fields on Wednesdays.
We will also be using Miller as needed to fill in gaps in the schedule, such as if we get fewer than four fields at Clark Park or on July 15 when we cannot use the Montrose fields. We are trying our best to keep the number of times we use Miller to an absolute minimum.
Note that we only have seven fields on Mondays and 10 on Wednesdays. This means that we are planning to cap the number of Rec-North teams at 14 and Competitive-North teams at 6. We don't anticipate this being a significant problem since that is how many we had last year. If we have significantly larger than anticipated growth in those two divisions, we will consider expanding those divisions, but that will require us to Miller for at least one game a night.
For now, we can say that the cap on men will initially be 150 in the North division and 110 in the South division, based on last year's numbers (roughly 11 men per team). If the number of women who register for CUSL-Rec grows enough that we can expand beyond the 24 teams we had last year, we will increase the number of men accordingly. As a last reminder, MALE ENTRY TO CUSL-REC IS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.
CUSL-COMPETITIVE (WEDNESDAY)
This division is there for the more skilled players that want to have a higher level of competition. Playing on Wednesday nights, this division is also co-ed with teams playing 4/3 or 5/2 at the discretion of captains. This division is also divided into North and South subdivisions.
CUSL-Competitive will maintain a 4/3 gender ratio on the field and in registration. Teams will be randomly assigned, but you have the option of registering with ONE BUDDY who will be assigned to the same team as you. CUSL-Competitive will be played at the North side fields listed above, including some games at Miller Meadows. As with CUSL- Rec, we will try to minimize the use of Miller Meadows, but there will be a few games there out of necessity.
CUSL-OPEN (MONDAY & WEDNESDAYS)
For players that want to play at a more recreational level, but without the strict gender restrictions of CUSL-Rec. Since the number of men in CUSL-Rec is capped to maintain the 4/3 ratio, CUSL-Open provides a division for the surplus of men to still have the opportunity to play over the summer.
CUSL-Open, obviously, has no gender restrictions. Games for CUSL- Open will be played entirely at Washington Park or Miller Meadows.
CUSL-THURSDAY
Playing on Thursday nights, the CUSL-Thursday division is co-ed and caters to players that are very new to ultimate. Veteran players committed to teaching basic ultimate skills and strategy captain the teams, and beginning players get the bulk of the time actually on the field. Each participant in CUSL-Thursday also gets a free CUSL disc to use in furthering their ultimate career.
As with last year, CUSL-Thursday will enforce a strict 4/3 gender ratio both on the field and in registration. Teams will be randomly assigned, but you have the option of registering with ONE BUDDY who will be assigned to the same team as you.
CUSL-WEST (TUESDAY)
For players that live out in the suburbs, and for whom coming into the city is too big a burden, we offer the CUSL-West league. Playing in Carol Stream, it is readily accessible from most of the suburbs. This is also a co-ed division with a level of play similar to CUSL-Rec.
CUSL-West will try to maintain a 4/3 gender ratio on the field. Teams will be randomly assigned, but you have the option of registering with ONE BUDDY who will be assigned to the same team as you. CUSL-West will be played at the same fields in Carol Stream that they were on last year.
Let's all have a great and safe summer playing the sport we all love.
